Year 6 - Looking Back and Forth - Friday 5th November 2021

Y6 – Friday 5th November 2021 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 6

Looking back:

Lots of photos to look at this week – we’ve uploaded the images once again for the Year 6 viewing the Exhibition.  New photos from our first week back follow on.  Enjoy seeing what goes on in class.

We’d like to start our first weekly review by saying that the class have had a brilliant first week back.  All the staff involved in teaching Year 6 have commented on how much we have enjoyed teaching them.  When we met with the class at the end of Year 5, they chose a selection of words to represent the “reputation” they would have both as a collective, and individually.  These are displayed on our wall and we refer to them regularly.  Do ask your children what words they chose.

As the new term begins, new topics too.  English has seen us grappling with lots of new vocabulary as we learn about the start of Charles Darwin’s journey aboard HMS Beagle.  Maths has seen the class consoliate and build on their knowledge of arithmetic topics such as prime numbers, prime factors, multiples, and the order of operations.  In science, the children have placed lots of slices of bread around the classroom and school (ask them why!) and they have continued to learn about Native American cultures.  Friday finished the week off beautifully with a discussion around Sir David Attenborough – our IPOTW – and of course, a thoroughly enjoyable session with our buddies.

Crewe Alexandra Free Match Tickets

Following on from our visit to the CAFC stadium, the class has been given a batch of complimentary ticket vouchers.  Each ticket can be exchanged for on adult and one under 11 ticket in the family stand for the forthcoming game against Gillingham on Saturday 20th November.  Please note that the complimentary vouchers MUST be redeemed in person at the Alex Club Store at least 24 hours prior to the 3pm kick off.  Anyone wishing to take advantage of this offer should contact Mrs Timmins before Monday 15th November so that should anyone like more than one voucher, these can be distributed without anyone missing out.  Thank you.

  • I loved seeing everybody’s work. I loved the penguins and the tent.
  • I loved the exhibition and I can’t wait to share it with my family.
  • Amazing – it was very exciting to walk around the world. It mentioned everything and it was one of the best.  I think it was amazing.
  • An amazing final exhibition for me!
  • Amazing and very phenomenal and every corner you turn is excitement.
  • I loved the exhibition – it was very creative. I loved the Year 1’s with Antarctica and Reception’s Asia with the Chinese dragon.
  • Amazing – I loved how the Year 4’s made circuits so you know what the flags of Europe are.
  • I loved the people figures that we did with Faith.
  • The exhibition this year was a masterpiece. Having been at this school for seven years, I hope the exhibition carries on being an incredible style for the junior hall.
  • I just like looking at what other classes have done it is so good.

Family discussion questions:

  • What do the following words mean? Protagonist, magnitude, unfathomable, endure, oppressive, intrigue and radiated.
  • What does “Ramphastidae” mean? How do we pronounce it?  Which reading skills did we use to help us pronounce the word?
  • What are common multiples and prime factors? Can you find the prime factors for 48?
  • What are “spores”?
  • Which hats are in the “Top 10 Hats”?

Looking forward:

  • We are continuing Darwin’s journey aboard HMS Beagle and we’ll be seeing where his journey took him and what he found along the way. There will be a continuation of the science work with a few new topics included for the foundation subjects.  The class has almost filled their marble jar so a treat MAY be on the way.
  • The class have been challenged to bring in all 27 homework diaries on THURSDAY. If so, their jar will be filled.  Can they do it!
  • Please also remember that pupils will be receiving their FLUENZ spray on Monday morning.
