Yr 4 Friday 11th October - Looking Back and Forth
Friday 11th October 2019 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4
Looking back:
This week we have rolled our sleeves up and got on with some serious exhibition work. The children completed their grey wolves reports, then investigated the perils of climbing Mt Everest. As well as looking at how Mt Everest got its name and how it was first measured using theodolites and trigonometry? A busy busy week.
In maths, we worked on arithmetic work with Mrs Benson. We looked at big numbers and working with 1,000’s. We had our swimming lesson at Sandbach. The children carried their animations with Mrs Cooper, the children really enjoyed this activity.
Year 4 – Pupils’ Highlights:
- Swimming and moving up a group
- The 'Flotsam' animation with Mrs Cooper
- Mountain art with the paper
- Creating the ‘big’ art for the Tibetan and Nepalese sides of Everest
- Finishing my writing about wolves
- The assemblies and getting ready for Gizmobots
Family discussion questions:
- Who is George Everest?
- What is a theodolite?
- What did they use to measure distances in the Great India Survey
- What was Everest’s name before it was renamed?
- (this is a tricky one) What do the Nepalese and Tibetans call Everest?
- Which two countries is Everest in?
- What are some of the perils when you climb Everest?
- What does the word altitude mean?
If you ask your child these questions and sign it to say you have had the quiz (don't worry about a perfect score). I will award 10 housepoints. You have to be in it – to win it!
Looking forward:
Could we please have the photographs for the headteacher’s holiday homework in as soon as possible?
Wheel Art and STEM homework needs to come in this week too.
This week we will continue our exhibition work, looking at the equipment and inventions mountaineers use to climb Everest. We will compare the equipment used by modern climbers to Mallory.
