Yr 4 Friday 3rd May - Looking Back and Forth
Friday 3rd May 2019 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4
Looking back:
The children this week began a new unit of work on ‘Narrative with an element of fantasy’. It was great for the class and I to finally use a Michael Morpurgo story (he is a class favourite). The story in question is the Butterfly Lion. The children have been gripped by the story this week and the part when our hero takes the lion into the wilderness in the dead of night – you could have heard a pin drop in the class. In our writing we have been working on writing dialogue between the characters – this is also part of our homework this week.
In maths we looked at length converting mm, cm and metres. We have also started an impressionist piece of art work – using Fountains Abbey as a stimulus. These are coming on a treat. In science we tested out materials to make the best ear defenders. On Friday we had our class assembly and taught our families everything we had learnt about the Tudors – we went into a lot of detail and we all spoke. It was a great opportunity to practice public speaking.
Year 4 – Pupils’ Highlights:
- The Butterfly Lion
- Practicing for the class assembly
- 5 minutes reading
- Lego with Mrs Cooper was AWESOME!

- Can you tell me the story of the Butterfly lion so far?
- What did you think was going to happen when Bertie took the lion into the wilderness at night?
- What is the fantasy element to the story?
- what do you think will happen next in the story?
- How many millimetres in a centimetre?
- How many centimetres in a metre?
- What materials did you test for your ear defenders? Which was the best and worst?
- Tell me about Lego with Mrs Cooper – what did you make?
Looking forward:
This week the children will continue their work on the Butterfly Lion. This will we will begin to plan another chapter to the story.
In maths the children will move onto work with negative numbers. After that we will start a new unit on fractions – in particular fractions of number.
