Yr 4 Friday 7th June - Looking Back and Forth

Friday 7th June  2019 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4

Looking back:

This week we have begun a new unit of work in English, looking at stories from other cultures.  We are focusing our attention on Africa.  We read extracts of the book – 'Africa is not a country' and learnt about what a diverse continent Africa is.

Did you know it is the only continent to be in all four hesmispheres?

Did you know there are 53 countries in Africa?

Well Year 4 do.  We looked at different children’s lives from all over Africa.  From South Africa to Egypt.  From Rwanda to Mauritania.  It was fascinating to learn and compare their lives to ours in England.

We discussed the word ‘diverse’ and decided we could use this for Africa as well as our own country.

In maths ,we looked multiplication using mental strategies, for example rounding, partitioning, doubling and halving.  We like these puzzly lessons.

We looked at the mountain ranges of Europe in geography.  It was great to go and revisit a topic from the beginning of the year and add to it.  We also looked at the history of Cheshire from the Ice Age to 2009 (when most of the class were born) when Cheshire was split into East and West Cheshire.

We looked at carnivores, omnivores and herbivores in science – we were astounded to find out that pandas are omnivores!

Year 4 – Pupils’ Highlights:

  • Premier sports athletics
  • Computing with Mrs Cooper – we did Scratch
  • Science animal research
  • June evening preparations
  • Having Lucy and Asa back
  • Nancy can’t wait for Anancy next week! (long story)
  • Chips!

Family discussion questions:

  • What is a carnivore?
  • What is a herbivore?
  • What is an omnivore?
  • How many countries are there in Africa?
  • How many languages are spoken in Africa?  (over a thousand)
  • Is there snow in Africa?
  • What does diverse mean?
  • Why did people settle in Cheshire?
  • Can you tell me what the small intestine does?
  • Can you tell me what the large intestine does?
  • (Here is a challenge!) Can you tell me what peristalsis is?

Looking forward:

This week the children will continue their work on African stories.  Retelling an old African story themselves.

In maths the children look at division and have some revision of concepts we haven’t look at for a while.  We will look at the EU and try to shed light on Brexit! In science we will look at food chains.  On Friday we will probably get very excited about June Evening!
