Yr 4 Looking Back and Forth 23rd October
Friday 23rd October 2020 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4
Looking back:
The children, this week were immersed into a text all about the infamous Annie Edison Taylor, the 60 year old widow, who was the first person to go over the Niagara Falls in a barrel! This feat was completed in 1901. The book was called 'The Queen Of The Falls', by the same man who wrote Jumanji - Chris Van Allsburg. As a class, we read the story and then created our own diary version of the adventure. The children astounded me, with their attention to detail and their enthusiasm for the subject matter. In fact, it is fair to say they have astounded me all term so far, with their hard work, determination and resilience. This is going to be an exciting year!
In maths, we have finished our work on Place Value and also completed out hot maths, to check that we are on track. We worked on our arithmetic skills with Mrs Riddell.
In the afternoons; we completed our journeys work and collages. The journeys work has now been displayed at the train station. We looked at writing for different audiences in computing, and redesigned a newspaper front page, to make it more eye catching and easier to read. We completed our topic on Sound and completed our end of unit assessment for this work.
Questions to ask at home:
- What does the word pitch mean?
- What does the word amplify mean?
- What does the word volume mean?
- What is the Doppler effect?
- What is sound measured in?
- What is the loudest sound on the Earth? (clue – 230 decibels)
Looking forward:
Next term, we will be starting a new text called ‘Whale’ in English. We will continue with our work on mountains in geography. However, we will start to look at Mt Everest more and the George Mallory.
We will be testing our new timestables on Friday, so please don’t forget. We will be looking at Roman Numerals in maths, then moving onto ‘Addition and Subtraction’.
Homework in Year 4
Reading – daily at least 15 mins – remember to take the Accelerated Reader Quizzes
Rockstars – as much as possible 10 mins daily is ideal – at least once a week for 20 mins
Soundcheck is a great tool to prepare the children for the MTC (Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check)
Spellings – Mrs Riddell – Please learn them for the test on Wednesday. It is better to look at them for 5 minutes each day than try to learn them all in one night. The children remember them better learnt over the week.
