Yr 4 Looking Back and Forth 27th November
Friday 27th November 2020 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4
Looking back:
This week in our English work, we wrote scene setting pieces to go alongside our super book 'Whale' (no longer named the mystery book). The children ‘blew me away’ with their vocabulary choices. No safe words like ‘big’, ‘small’ or ‘large’ around here! No, vocabulary choices like, ominous, elusive, treacherous and fragile to name but a few!
In maths, we continued to work hard subtraction, looking at different strategies to check our maths, as well as efficient strategies that they can use.
In the afternoons; we completed our mountain dioramas, they look super cool and the children are rightly proud of their efforts. We looked at changing states in science with Ice Hands, this literally was a cool experiment! We learnt more about Mallory, also Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, who were the first people to successfully reach the summit on Everest and descend as well.
Questions to ask at home:
- What is an efficient strategy in maths?
- Who are Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay?
- Tell me something about their journey up Everest?
- What did they leave at the summit?
- Why did Tenzing leave sweets as an offering?
- What are the three states of water?
CHALLENGE – If anyone from Year 4 brings the answers to these questions to me by Tuesday – they will receive 10 housepoints!
Highlights of the Week
- Nessy
- Making mountains
- Singing with Mrs Sant
- Writing about the whales in English
- Learning about solids, liquids and gases
- Everything!
Looking forward:
This week, we will publish our scene setting writing and move onto instructions and explanations.
We will begin a new unit of work on maths, all about length and perimeter. We will investigate further changing states of matter in science. We will be finishing off our mountains topic, with a quiz and top ten facts.
Homework in Year 4
Reading – daily at least 15 mins – remember to take the Accelerated Reader Quizzes
Rockstars – as much as possible 10 mins daily is ideal – at least once a week for 20 mins
Soundcheck is a great tool to prepare the children for the MTC (Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check)
Spellings – Mrs Riddell – Please learn them for the test on Wednesday. It is better to look at them for 5 minutes each day than try to learn them all in one night. The children remember them better learnt over the week.
