Yr 4 - Looking Back and Forth - Friday 7th January 2022
Friday 7th January– Looking Back & Forth in Year 4
Looking back: This week, we started a new book in English. The class still haven’t read the book, but have been puzzling out some picture clues. As I am coming to expect with Year 4, they blew me away with their detective skills! They made great observations and were able to justify their thoughts with clues from the pictures. In maths, we started to work on multiplication and division. We also had our arithmetic lesson with Mrs Riddell on Wednesday. The class went on a ‘sounds’ walk around the school with Mrs Cooper. There was frantic listening and notation. They were very ninja-like, you wouldn’t believe how quiet Year 4 can be on full ‘stealth mode’!
Building On
- Maths work from Year 3 – multiplication and division work. Also building on Year 1 and 2 working on groups of numbers and arrays.
- Reading – using pictorial clues to make prediction about the text. The children have been working on this since they first started enjoying books nestled on your knees!
- Sounds work in science – learning about their bodies in Reception and Year 1.
Questions to ask at home
- What is the new book called you are looking at class?
- Who is Ernest Shackleston (Today's 5 minutes a day)? - Endurance 22: Antarctic expedition to search for Shackleton's wrecked ship - CBBC Newsround
- What is a good way to describe the crow in the book?
- What is a noun tower?
- Do you just add 0 when multiplying by 10 (they should say ‘no – you need to move the numbers one place to the left)
Highlights of the week for the children
- Writing our noun towers
- Listening to the sounds on our sound walk
- Our timestables test
- Our spelling test (they do seem to enjoy the tests or maybe the housepoints! Mmm)
- Working on the pre-topic work with Mrs Cooper
- Maths work multiplying by 10
- Looking at the pictures from our new book
Looking forward:
This week, we will continue to learn more about our new book. We will be working on fronted adverbials, we looked at last term. We will be ‘building on’ our knowledge.
In maths, we will be looking at multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100 as well as problem solving. We will continue to learn more about sound and begin our new fascinating topic on the Anglo-Saxons.
Homework in Year 4

Rockstars – as much as possible 10 mins daily is ideal – at least once a week for 20 mins
