we 24th November Year 1

Hi All,

This week in English, we will beginning a new topic on traditional stories this week. This closely links to our work on fairy stories.

In the week we will be looking at the story of the Gingerbread man. The children will be sequencing the story and looking at the characters, as well as writing their own version of the story.

If you have a chance to look at traditional stories with your child, this would really support their learning in school. Traditional tales very often have a meaning to them or moral. This would prove as an excellent discussion point after reading the story. Can your child work out what the lesson or moral is?

You could:

  • Look at how traditional tales always seem to begin (once upon a time or something else?)
  • Look at how they end – how is this different than the fairy stories they read?
  • The characters are they clever, sly or trusting.
  • Are there any common themes that you and your child notice (animals that talk, sly foxes, silly people, repeating patterns in the story)
  • Could you child retell the story to you.
  • Could you think of 3 words to describe each of the main characters?

In maths, we will be continuing working on addition and subtraction. This week we will be using our number bonds learning and applying them in problem solving and reasoning activities.

In the afternoon we will be continuing our new topic of old toys. The children will be completing some follow up work from the visit to Tatton Mansion on Wednesday.
