Y1 Friday 10th December 2021– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

We have had a great week in Year 1- everyone has worked so hard this week and have enjoyed practising for our Christmas performance.

In Maths we have continued to look at subtraction before exploring the names and properties of 2D shapes.

In English we have written our instructions for how to trap a witch.

In PHSE we have thought about people who help us and in what ways they do this.

In DT we have continued our quilling project and looked at different moving books and pictures.

We have consolidated our autumn 2 learning by completing quizzes.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Practising our handwriting.

√ Showing how well we have learnt our spellings in our spelling test.

√ Taking away by breaking away and finding the part.

√ Writing our instructions for how to trap a witch.

√ Quilling for our Christmas cards.

√ Discussing people that help us and in what ways they do this.

√ Practising for our Christmas performance.

√ Moving in different ways, balancing and landing in PE.

Family discussion questions:

  • What are the different elements to moving pictures and books?
  • Can you instruct your parents to do something? What imperative verbs did you use?
  • Can you spot any of this week’s sounds in your reading books? ‘oy and ir’.

Looking forward:

Next week we will look at 2 D and 3D shapes in Maths.

In DT we will make moving pictures and continue with our Christmas crafts.

We cannot wait for you to see our Christmas performance- we have been working so hard!

Reminders:

  • Christmas Dinner day Tuesday 14th December-please bring a Christmas cracker to pull.

  • Nativity for Y1 families to watch- Wednesday 15th December 9:15am start.

  • Class Christmas cards to be handed into me by Friday 10th December- these will be handed out on the last week of term.

  • Spelling and handwriting homework is sent home each Friday and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 5 spellings home; this amount can be changed weekly dependent on how well they are retained by the children and will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations. HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY 7TH JANUARY.

  • Please bring books in on Thursday’s but I will keep these until Friday morning to change them (do not worry about the reading challenge- this will still be counted).

  • Please continue to read every night. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. Reading Challenge’s will be awarded on Thursday’s after checking Reading Diaries- these will start afresh again the first week back so any reading over the holidays will count towards the new term.

Thank you for your continued support
