Y1 Friday 10th January 2022– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

We have had a lovely first week back. This week we have named and recognised 2D and 3D shapes before making different patterns with them.

In Science we have thought about what we know about our bodies and in History what we know about toys.

In PHSE we have thought about people in our lives that help us, we generated some super ideas and drew pictures of those that we admired the most. We looked at the book ‘My Grandpa is amazing’- this inspired us to think about people of different ages and though about our own Grandads (or people that are like a Grandad to us) and why they are special to us.

In Computing we have instructed a Beebot to move around a track based on directions we inputted and used the laptops to direct a Beebot using the keys and touchpad to do so.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Exploring 2 D shapes- looking at their sides and corners.

√ Exploring 3D shapes- looking at their faces, edges and vertices.

√ Thinking about people that help us and how they do this.

√ Moving during games and understanding why rules are important in PE.

√ Listening to the story of ‘My Grandpa is amazing’- thinking about our own Grandad’s and the different ages of people in our loves.

√ Finding sounds in phoneme spotters and matching sounds in Phonics.

√ Considering how we can find out information from the past.

√ Using our mini laptops to log on and navigate the internet safely.

√ Understanding that people grow older and what we will be able to do as we grow up.

Family discussion questions:

  • True or false? A square and a rectangle are the same.
  • What are the ways you can find out information about the past?
  • What people help us? Which are the most important to you and why?
  • What 2D shapes can you find on 3D shape faces?

Looking forward:

Next week we will be using the book of ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy’ to inspire our writing- this is linked to our History topic of toys.

In Maths we will looking at numbers to 20- writing, reading, counting and partitioning.

In Science we will be looking at the different parts of our bodies and how each part moves.

In History we will be thinking about questions we will ask our Grandparents about the toys they had a child.

Reminders:

  • Garner dress down day Friday 14.1.22.

Homework in Year 1

  • Spelling and handwriting homework is sent home each Friday and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 5 spellings home; this amount can be changed weekly dependent on how well they are retained by the children and will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations. Homework due Friday 14.1.22.

  • Please continue to read every night. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. Reading Challenge’s will be awarded on Friday’s after checking Reading Diaries on Thursday after school. This is now starting afresh for this half term.
