Y1 Friday 10th June 2022– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

I hope you all had a fantastic half term break.

Wow!! The children have made us feel so proud this week with their excellent effort and enthusiasm for Phonics!

In English, we have looked at sentence accuracy through changing nouns and adjectives for alternatives, whilst still ensuring our sentences make sense.

In Maths, we have described turns- quarter, half, three-quarter and full, looking at how we and objects move and change direction.

In Science and Geography, we have written a fact file about summer including when it is, the weather, the day light hours and how to protect ourselves from the sun.

In Science, we have thought about what we know and want to find out in our sea shore animal’s topic and ways we can help to keep sea animals safe.

In PHSE, we have used the book ‘My world, your world’- exploring the understanding that we share the world with different people and respecting the differences we have and noticing any similarities.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Moving in to make different turns by following instructions using our bodies then directing Bee Bots to make quarter, half, three quarter and full turns by programming it.

√ Recognising turns based on the starting points and positions of objects.

√ Substituting nouns and adjectives, with alternatives, whilst ensuring sentences still make sense.

√ Checking sentences have capital letters for different purposes.

√ Playing split digraph bingo and reading text that includes tricky consonant blends.

√ Painting something special for an occasion that is coming up.

√ Running races in PE.

√ Using the book ‘My world, your world’ to help us to reflect on the differences and similarities we share with people around the world.

Family discussion questions:

  • What happened in one of the books you have read this week? What did you like/dislike about it?
  • Can you make a teddy to a full, quarter, half and three-quarter turn?
  • Describe summer- when is it is? What is the weather like? Day light hours? How do you stay safe?

Looking forward:

In English, we will begin to use the book ‘The Secret of Black Rock’ to inspire our writing.

In Maths, we will explore Place Value up to 100

In Science, we will be sorting between summer and winter clothes based on their materials.

In Geography, we will be identifying and sorting human and physical features within our school grounds and writing a letter to our twin school, Elizabethfontein, in South Africa to tell them about what our school is like- we are hoping they will write back to us.
