Y1 Friday 13th May 2022– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

Another great week in Year 1!

In English we have read the book ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ and explored the alliteration and similes in the book before writing our own. We have read my model text based on the story and answered retrieval and inference questions.

In Maths we have looked at doubles before beginning to look at sharing to make equal groups.

In Science we have explored food that come from plants and which parts we eat

In Geography we drawn or constructed an aerial view map of our infant site and used Google Earth to help us.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Doubling by doing repeated addition number sentences.

√ Using sharing circles to make equal groups.

√ Making equal groups through sharing counters before drawing them.

√ Exploring plants that are food and grouping them based on the parts we eat.

√ Answering questions based on what we have read.

√ Choosing correct words to compare things to each other (similes).

√ Generating adjectives and nouns with the same initial sound (alliteration).

√ Using Google Earth to help us to see what the aerial view of our school is like.

√ Drawing or constructing an aerial view map of our infant site.

√ Throwing and catching beanbags and balls in PE.

√ Reading words with the alternative ‘igh’ (as in light, shine and try) and ’f’ (as in cough, fluff, phonics and foot) sounds.

√ Designing our sandwiches with some fillings that come from plants.

√ Learning about the Sabbath the Jewish day of rest in RE.

√ Listening for the beat in a tune and moving our body in time in Music.

Family discussion questions:

  • Finish the simile ‘As high as…’
  • What is double 12? How can you work this out? What is the number sentence?
  • How many foods have you eaten this week that are from plants? Do you know which parts?

Looking forward:

Next week we will sequence the story, look at the features within the text and begin to plan.

In Maths we will begin our fraction unit- finding half and a quarter of objects, shapes and amounts.

In Geography we will be looking at the human and physical features in our school grounds.

In Science we will be identifying and naming trees based on their leaves, as well as naming the different parts trees have.

Reminders:

  • I have put together a Phonics activity booklet- games, phoneme spotters, reading of real and fake words. I thought this would be something fun for the children to enjoy and to reinforce their Phonics learning.

  • Our 14 day Reading Challenge has started again, so please write each time your child reads so they can earn 10 house points for their 14 consecutive reads. I will change books overnight on a Thursday

  • Alongside the spelling and handwriting/Phonics homework, I have sent home Maths homework. This will be marked together so any misconceptions can be address. Please complete this in pencil.

  • PE this half term is Friday- please wear PE kits on this day.

If you have any questions please ask.

Thanks again for your continued support.

Kind regards and take care

Ms Cummins
