Y1 Friday 15th September 2023– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

What a wonderful week we have had in Year 1.

In Maths we have been sorting objects based on their colour, shape and size and solving problems related to this.

In English we have looked at the book ‘Not a stick’. We have made guesses about what the stick is because it is ‘not a stick’. We collected sticks and designed objects based on our chosen sticks and labelled them before labelling pictures from the story and writing captions.

We have begun to think about our Science and Geography topics for our annual exhibition- this is based on ‘Celebrating Life’. We will be learning about the seasons and the weather we experience as well as looking at animals, their characteristics, what they eat and their habitats.

We have looked at how to stay safe online and looked at what our brains look like and how they help us as part of our PHSE learning.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Using our ‘chopping arms’ to help us to segment phase 3 words when writing and reading them.

√ Sorting objects based on their colour, size or shape both practically and recorded.

√ Listening to the story of ‘Not a stick’ and making predictions.

√ Drawing our ‘not a stick’ objects based on the book.

√ Writing a list about what the stick could be.

√ Drawing pastel lines on animal outlines to create textures.

√ Writing labels and captions using pictures from ‘Not a stick’ book.

√ Thinking about what we know and what we want to find out about animals that are birds, mammals and insects.

√ Thinking about what we know about the seasons.

√ Controlling the ball in football in PE.

√ Designing our bird houses.

√ Learning about the features of Christian church in RE.

√ Repeating colours and numbers in French.

√ Signing colours in Makaton.

Family discussion questions:

  • Can you write a caption about an object from ‘Not a Stick’?
  • What number comes in the middle of this sequence? 4, __, ___, 7 ,8, 9 ___
  • Find some of your things at home- how could you sort them? Size, colour or shape? Can you think of anymore?

Looking forward:

Next week we will continue writing labels, lists and captions; using ‘Dangerous’ book to stimulate our writing.

In Maths we will be counting objects before moving onto larger groups.

We will sort animals into groups based on their features- birds, mammals, and insects (invertebrates).

Reminders-

Reading books should be brought into school each Thursday so they can be changed overnight. They will be given back each Friday.

Please continue to read every night as this underpins so much learning in Year 1. For every consecutive 14 days of reading the children will receive 10 house points and see their face on the ‘Reading Challenge Wall of Fame’- If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track their progress (They will automatically get a read for Thursday night when I keep the books).

As part of the exhibition, we are making recycled bug hotels and bird houses.

We need your help- please!

If you have any, washing capsule boxes, dish washer tablet boxes, cereal boxes, kitchen roll cardboard tubes, juice cartons and plastic bottles, please can you bring them in.

Ideally, we need them in by next week.

Thanks for your support

Mrs Carew
