Y1 Friday 18th February 2022– Looking Back & Forth
Looking back:
In English we have planned and written recount messages in response to the book ‘Major Glad Major Dizzy’.
In Maths we have explored subtraction through using tens frames and crossing out, counting back not crossing 10 before moving onto crossing 10.
In History we have designed toys for the future, in groups, thinking about what it is made from and how it works.
In Science we have consolidated our learning by completing a quiz.
We enjoyed our marble jar treat this afternoon- 40 marbles earnt this half term!
Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:
√ Practising team work, following rules, finding space and direction in PE.
√ Using tens frames to take away including drawing circles and crossing out.
√ Using a number line to count back not crossing 10 and moving onto crossing 10.
√ Working hard to read and write words including the e_e and u_e split digraphs.
√ Planning our recount message response to Major Glad.
√ Writing a recount message in a letter to Major Glad.
√ Sharing facts, we have learnt about toys from the past and toys now.
√ Spotting split digraphs in phoneme spotters.
√ Finding pairs to 10 as part of a snakes and ladders game.
√ Singing and moving in time to songs in Music.
√ Learning about the importance of the disciples to Jesus in RE.
√ Working together in a group to design a toy for the future.
Family discussion questions:
- What could a toy in the future be like? What is it made from and how does it work?
- True or false? 15-2= 17. Explain.

Looking forward:
After our half term holidays, we will be looking at the book Hermelin and writing a detective story.
In Maths we will be looking at Place Value to 50.
In Geography we will be looking at the weather and seasonal variations
In Science we will be looking at animals where we live … and much more!
Homework in Year 1
- Spelling and handwriting homework is sent home each Friday and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 5 spellings home; this amount can be changed weekly dependent on how well they are retained by the children and will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This really helps to reinforce the sounds we have been working on in class and enables the children to use the sounds / words in their writing. Homework due Friday 4.3.22.
- Please continue to read every night. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. Reading Challenge’s will be awarded on Friday’s after checking Reading Diaries on Thursday after school. If you have any questions please ask.
Reminders
- World Book Day Thursday 3rd March- come into school in your party clothes to celebrate 25 years of World Book Day. Please bring in your favourite book too.
- Plastic milk bottle or juice carton- please wash and send into school by Friday 4th March for our D and T creation.
- Garner House- you have won the house points for this half term- free dress day Thursday 10th
