Y1 Friday 1st March 2024– Looking Back & Forth

Y1 Friday 1st March 2024– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

In English we begun to explore our both for the half term- Hermelin. We have made predictions, explored language and edited sentences to ensure they include capital letters and full stops, as well as adding ‘un’ prefix to root words to show the opposite meaning.

In Maths we have counted back on a number, found the difference and solved missing number problems.

In Geography we have read information about the seasons and used this information to answer questions.

In History we have learnt about the significant event The Terra Nova Expedition that Captain Scott took to Antarctica.

In Computing and Art and Design we have used the Purple Mash programme to draw penguins on the laptops.

In Science we have read information about what polar animals eat and identified if they are an Omnivore, Herbivore and Carnivore.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Mirroring our partner’s dance moved in PE.

√ Finding the difference between amounts.

√ Counting backwards on a number line.

√ Working hard to read and write words including split digraph ‘o_e’ which makes the ‘oa’ sound and ‘u_e’ which makes the ‘oo’ or ‘yoo’ sound.

√ Exploring and understanding the meaning of words found in Hermelin.

√ Editing work to include capital letters for names, places and the beginning of sentences.

√ Reading facts about the seasons and using this information to answer questions.

√ Understanding the events of Captain Scott’s Terra Nova Expedition.

√ Learning about Lent in RE.

√ Controlling a mousepad to draw free hand pictures of penguins.

√ Watching ice skaters dance to the tune of the music in Music.

Family discussion questions:

  • True or false? I will say 29 when counting backwards from 28 to 20.
  • Does the word ‘goostrey’ need a capital letter? Why?
  • What was the ship called that Captain Scott travelled from Cardiff to Antarctica called?

Looking forward:

Next week we will be looking at adding ‘es and s’ to words to change them from singular to plural, using the conjunction ‘and’ to join words and ideas and using exclamation marks in our work.

In Maths we will be consolidating our learning of addition and subtraction before beginning our Place Value to 50 unit of work.

In Science we will be identifying features of a penguin which allow them to survive in Antarctica.

In History we will be learning about Captain Scott’s life.

Homework in Year 1

  • Spelling and phonics homework is sent home each Friday and is due back in the following Friday. It is based on the letter we have learnt in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 5 spellings home; this amount can be changed weekly dependent on how well they are retained by the children and will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This really helps to reinforce the sounds we have been working on in class and enables the children to use the sounds / words in their writing. Homework due Friday.

  • Please continue to read every night. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. Reading Challenge’s will be awarded on Friday’s after checking Reading Diaries on Thursday after school. If you have any questions please ask.
