Y1 Friday 1st October 2021– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

Another fantastic week in Year 1- great effort to complete independent work and attitude to learning!

In Maths we have counted forwards and backwards and found one more and one less than a given number.

In English we have used adjectives to describe our friends and put these ideas into sentences including capital letters and full stops.

In Art we have layered cold coloured materials to create a textured collage and used pastels to create the look of feathers on our penguin outlines.

In History we have learnt about Captain Scott’s journey to reach the South Pole and ordered this in a timeline.

We have looked at the ways to stay safe online.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Continuing to use our chopping arms to read and write words using phoneme from Phase 3.

√ Writing about our friends using capital letters, finger spaces, full stops and adjectives in our sentences.

√ Choosing cold colours and different materials to create collage tiles for our exhibition.

√ Reflecting on what it was like for Captain Scott on his Antarctica Expedition.

√ Using pastel pencils to draw lines of different sizes to create textures.

√ Counting forwards and backwards.

√ Finding one more and one less than a given number.

√ Moving and finding space in PE.

√ Continuing to repeat and saying greetings and count to 10 in French.

Family discussion questions:

  • What adjectives would you use to describe your best friend?
  • What happened to Captain Scott in Antarctica? How do you think he felt?
  • ___ is one more than ___? __ is one less than __?

Looking forward:

Next week we will begin to learn a ‘story map’- putting actions to the words and following the pictures to help us remember facts for our non-chronological report about Antarctica.

In Maths we will be comparing objects and numbers.

In History we will write facts about Captain Scott’s time in Antarctica.

In Art we will be painting- mixing colours and using different six-zed brushes for different purposes.

Reminders:

Please continue to read every night. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. Book change on Thursday- please ensure books are in school so these can be changed overnight.

Just to clarify- Reading challenges are counted up every Thursday during book change and then awarded on Friday (backdated if awarded before that). We celebrate this achievement as a class all together.

Thank you for your continued support
