Y1 Friday 22nd April 2022– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter break.

In English we have begun to explore letters- ordering a letter and identifying features of a letter.

In Maths we have begun our multiplication and division unit by sharing equally into groups.

In Science we have explored our school grounds to find wild plants.

In PHSE we have used the book Max the Champion to discuss differences in how we use our bodies, the disabilities some people have and what they can use to help them. We reflected on our talents and we thought about what we are a ‘champion’ at!

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Reading clues based on the story of Hermelin and matching them to the characters.

√ Sequencing a letter into the correct order.

√ Identifying the features of a letter.

√ Sharing objects equally into groups- doing so methodically to ensure accuracy.

√ Thinking about what we know about Goostrey and what we want to find out.

√ Listening to the story of ‘Max the champion’ and realising what we are a ‘champion’ at.

√ Using positional language to direct our partners around the playground.

√ Controlling the ball when rolling in PE.

√ Reading and writing alternative pronunciations for ‘ch’ as in machine, check and school and ‘ou’ as in would, you, soup and mount,

Family discussion questions:

  • What wild plants can you see on your way home or in your garden?
  • If you share 22 equally between 2 groups, how many are there in each group? Could you share 23 equally?
  • After looking at ‘Max the champion’ can you decide what some one in your house is a ‘champion’ at and why?

Looking forward:

In English we will plan and write our letter to Hermelin to tell him how wonderful we think he is.

In Maths we will be adding equal groups then making arrays to help is when multiplying.

In Science we will be recognising and naming common garden plants and in Geography thinking about where we live and what we can see from our window.

Reminders:

  • I have put together a Phonics activity booklet- games, phoneme spotters, reading of real and fake words. I thought this would be something fun for the children to enjoy and to reinforce their Phonics learning.

  • Our 14 day Reading Challenge has started again, so please write each time your child reads so they can earn 10 house points for their 14 consecutive reads. I will change books overnight on a Thursday

  • Alongside the spelling and handwriting/Phonics homework, I have sent home Maths homework. This will be marked together so any misconceptions can be address. Please complete this in pencil.

  • PE this half term is Friday- please wear PE kits on this day.

  • Film Night- Friday 29th April 6pm in the Village Hall- tickets on sale Monday- first come, first served- details in the newsletter.

If you have any questions please ask.

Thanks again for your continued support.

Kind regards and take care

Ms Cummins
