Y1 Friday 23rd June 2023– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

In English, we have continued to use the book ‘The Secret of Black Rock’ to inspire our work. We have looked at how speech tells us more information and used different conjunctions to join sentences.

In Maths, we have continued our place value within 100 unit- partitioning numbers and comparing them using the language and symbols of less than and more than.

In Science, we have sorted sea shore animals into groups and thought about their features.

In D&T, we have designed an African themed T-Shirt ready for printing.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Writing speech in speech bubbles based on what Erin from the story would say.

√ Including conjunctions to join ideas- ‘and, so, because and but’.

√ Partitioning numbers based on tens and ones.

√ Counting in 1s and 10s from 50-100.

√ Sorting sea shore animals into groups based on their features- Mammals, Birds, Fish and Invertebrates.

√ Identifying features of sea shore animals.

√ Taking part in running races ready for Sports Day in PE.

√ Designing African inspired T-Shirt design.

√ Learning about the Hinduism Creation Story in RE.

√ Team games in PE.

Family discussion questions:

  • What conjunction can you use to join these sentences? I went to the shop. I didn’t like any of the sweets.
  • How many tens and ones are in 68? Is it greater or smaller than 6 tens and 9 ones?
  • Is a Seagull a Mammal, Bird, Fish or Invertebrate? How do you know?

Looking forward:

In English, we will be planning and writing our retell of ‘The Secret of Black Rock’.

In Maths, we will be comparing numbers using the language and symbols of less than and more than before finding one more and one less than given numbers.

In Geography, we will be going on our village walk, drawing a journey line based on our route and comparing our school features with Elizabethfontein’s school.

Reminders:

  • Rose Day Saturday 24th

  • Village Walk Tuesday 27th June- please wear sensible shoes, sun cream and bring a water bottle. Thank you to everyone that volunteered to join us.

  • Our 14 day Reading Challenge has started again, so please write each time your child reads so they can earn 10 house points for their 14 consecutive reads. I will change books overnight on a Thursday

  • I have sent home spellings, reading comprehension and Maths homework based on counting to 100. Please complete this in pencil.

  • PE this half term is Friday- please wear PE kits on this day.

If you have any questions please ask.

Thanks again for your continued support.

Kind regards and take care
