Y1 Friday 24th June 2022– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

In English, we have continued to use the book ‘The Secret of Black Rock’ to inspire our work. We have looked at how speech tells us more information and used different conjunctions to join sentences.

In Maths, we have continued our place value within 100 unit- partitioning numbers and comparing them using the language and symbols of less than and more than.

In Science, we have sorted sea shore animals into groups and thought about their features.

In History, we have learnt about Sir Bernard Lovell and The Lovell Telescope as this links nicely to our Geography topic based on our locality.

In D&T, we have designed an African themed T-Shirt ready for printing.

We loved watching 'Bable at the Kitcen Table'- how taleneted Sophia was! She performed it all alone and remembered all the words, played instruments and sang songs.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Writing speech in speech bubbles based on what Erin from the story would say.

√ Including adjectives to join ideas- and, so, because and but.

√ Sequencing the story ready for planning.

√ Partitioning numbers based on their tens and ones.

√ Comparing numbers within 100.

√ Sorting sea shore animals into groups based on their features- Mammals, Birds, Fish and Invertebrates

√ Taking part in running races ready for Sports Day in PE.

√ Designing African inspired T-Shirt design.

√ Looking at the Quran in RE.

√ Learning about Sir Bernard Lovell.

Family discussion questions:

  • What conjunction can you use to join these sentences? I went to the shop. I didn’t like any of the sweets.
  • How many tens and ones are in 68? Is it greater or smaller than 6 tens and 9 ones?
  • Is a Seagull a Mammal, Bird, Fish or Invertebrate? How do you know?

Looking forward:

In English, we will be planning our story based on ‘The Secret of Black Rock’.

In Maths, we will be finding one more and one less than given numbers before moving onto our money topic.

In Geography, we will be going on our village walk, drawing a journey line based on our route and comparing our school features with Elizabethfontein’s school.
