Y1 Friday 26th January 2024– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

In English we have planned and written our own finding story using my model write text and the book of ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy’ as inspiration.

In Maths, we have used number lines to find numbers and estimate where numbers are.

In Science, we have thought about parts of our body and how we use them.

In History we have explored toys from the past and learnt about what toys were like in Victorian times. We are really enjoying reading the family letters that have been sent in related to toys from the past.

In computing we have made a human pictogram and learnt, as a class, how to make a pictogram using the Purple Mash programme.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Looking at the different parts of a story.

√ Planning and writing a finding story.

√ Exploring a number line with numbers up to 20.

√ Estimating where numbers are on a blank number line.

√ Moving parts of our body in different ways in Science.

√ Looking at toys from the past and exploring how they work.

√ Learning about china dolls, skipping ropes and china tea sets that were played with by ‘rich’ Victorian children.

√ Throwing balls with accuracy in team games in PE.

√ Learning about the followers of Jesus (including their names and their role in Jesus’ life) in RE.

√ Moving based on the pitch of the music in Music.

√ Completing a tally chart to help us to find out information to make a human pictogram and a pictogram on a laptop.

Family discussion questions:

  • What was the toy that Albert lost? What did he find under the floorboards?
  • What numbers are bigger than 15 but smaller than 20?
  • What were Victorian toys like? Were the toys different for poor and rich children?

Looking forward:

In English we will be finishing our finding stories and exploring poetry about toys- reading aloud and performing them for our classmates. We will begin to explore recount messages using ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy’ as inspiration.

In Maths we will compare and order numbers then consolidate our learning through a Place Value Quiz.

In Science we will explore our senses including feely bags to test our sense of touch, ‘unnatural walk’ to test our sight, sound clips to test our sense of hearing, smelly pots to test our sense of smell and guessing flavours of crisps when testing our sense of test.

In History we will explore old toys and information books. We will read our letters and discuss their content as well as begin to understand a timeline and how toys could be ordered on it.

Homework in Year 1

  • Spelling and handwriting/ phonics homework is sent home each Friday and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 5 spellings home; this amount can be changed weekly dependent on how well they are retained by the children and will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations.

  • Please continue to read every night. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. Reading Challenge’s will be awarded on Friday’s after checking Reading Diaries on Thursday after school. If you have any questions please ask.

Reminders

  • Thank you to those of you that have replied to us- they are brilliant. If you have not already, please reply to our class letter with a letter about toys you had as a child (if this could be done by grandparents too that would be wonderful) and if you have a photo or can find one online, to show what your toy was like that would be helpful. These will be stuck into your child’s History book and read out across the weeks to the class. Thank you.
