Y1 Friday 4th March 2022– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

In English we begun to explore our both for the half term- Hermelin. We have made predictions, explored language and edited sentences to ensure they include capital letters and full stops, as well as adding ‘un’ prefix to root words to show the opposite meaning.

In Maths we have looked at counting forwards and backwards up to 50 and used our knowledge of tens and ones to help us with this.

In Geography we have read information about the seasons and used this information to answer questions.

In Science we learnt about the 6 different groups animals can be classified as- mammals, amphibians, reptiles, insects, birds and fish.

In Art and Design we have looked at the work of Kandinsky. We have discussed his work and expressed our likes and dislikes and learnt about hot and cold colours.

In PHSE discussing what it means to be a good friend.

For World Book Day we shared our favourite stories with each other and explained why we loved them. We particularly enjoyed listening to MC Grammar’s World Book Day song!

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Moving in different ways on equipment in PE.

√ Counting forwards and backwards up to 50.

√ Counting in tens then counting on to add the ones to make counting bigger amounts easier.

√ Working hard to read and write words including alternative pronunciation of ‘i’- wild and will and ‘o’- gold and hot.

√ Exploring and understanding the meaning of words found in Hermelin.

√ Editing work to include capital letters for names, places and the beginning of sentences.

√ Reading facts about the seasons and using this information to answer questions.

√ Sorting animals into groups based on their characteristics.

√ Discussing how we can be a good friend in PHSE.

√ Playing percussion instruments and moving in time to a song in Music.

√ Learning about Lent and why we celebrate Pancake Day in RE.

Family discussion questions:

  • True or false? I will say 29 when counting backwards from 28 to 20.
  • Does the word ‘goostrey’ need a capital letter? Why?
  • Can you remember a characteristic a mammal has? A bird? A fish?

Looking forward:

Next week we will be looking at adding ‘es and s’ to words to change them from singular to plural, using the conjunction ‘and’ to join words and ideas and using exclamation marks in our work.

In Maths we will be finding one more and one less, comparing objects and numbers and ordering numbers.

In Computing we will be looking at online safety.

In Art and Design and Technology we will be painting and designing our recycled bird houses.

In Science we will be bird spotting in our school grounds.

Homework in Year 1

  • Spelling and handwriting homework is sent home each Friday and is due back in the following Friday. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what we have looked at in school including High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 3 or 5 spellings home; this amount can be changed weekly dependent on how well they are retained by the children and will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This really helps to reinforce the sounds we have been working on in class and enables the children to use the sounds / words in their writing. Homework due Friday 11.3.22

  • Please continue to read every night. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. Reading Challenge’s will be awarded on Friday’s after checking Reading Diaries on Thursday after school. If you have any questions please ask.

Reminders
