Y1 Thursday 1st April 2021– Looking Back & Forth

Y1 Thursday 1st April 2021– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

What a great end to the spring term we have had in school! I am so impressed with how well the children have settled back into school life.

This week we have consolidated our ‘lockdown learning’ of addition and subtraction up to 20, place value to 50 and Science topic of Polar Places.

We have shown our reading skills and all of our knowledge about punctuation and grammar.

In Art and DT, we have finished our bird house designs and evaluated them saying what we liked about them and what we would change next time.

We have published our non-chronological report about birds for display.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Reading with Ms Cummins.

√ Identifying and sorting words with split digraphs.

√ Writing up our bird non-chronological reports for display.

√Using the percussion instruments in Music.

√ Learning about the resurrection in RE.

√ Playing snakes and ladders games linked to addition and subtraction.

√ Using number bonds to 10 to help us learn number bonds to 20.

√ Cutting out designs and painting our bird houses.

√ Saying what we like and what we would change about our bird houses.

√ Enjoying listening to the story of Charlie and the chocolate factory.

√ Learning to repeat and say names of fruit and birds in French.

√ Enjoying our marble jar treat of an afternoon playing with the toys with a very cold ice pop.

Family discussion questions:

  • What did you like about your bird house design? What would you change?
  • How many tens and ones are there in… 38? 45? 50?
  • Who is your favourite character in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory story? Why?

Looking forward:

After the Easter break we will be writing a detective story using the book as Hermelin as inspiration in English.

In Maths we will be beginning to learning about multiplication and division.

In Geography we will be learning about the human and physical features in our school grounds and our local area of Goostrey and using this exploration to study trees and plants too.

…and much more!

Reminders:

  • Spelling and handwriting homework was sent home Friday 26th March and due back in Friday after Easter. Handwriting is based on the letter we have practised in school and the spellings are based on what sounds we have looked at in school and may include High Frequency Words (HFW) or Common Exception Words (CEW) from the Year 1 spelling list. I will send 5 or 7 spellings home and the children will be tested informally on a Friday morning. This is nothing to worry about and gives children experience of homework before Year 2 and helps with their Year 1 handwriting and spelling expectations. HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY 23rd April after Easter.

  • Our 14 day Reading Challenge is continuing after, please write each time your child reads so they can earn 10 house points for their 14 consecutive reads. I will change books overnight on a Thursday as usual so books to be brought in on Thursday 22nd April.

If you have any questions please ask.

Thanks again for your continued support.

Kind regards and take care

Ms Cummins
