Y5 Weekly Update 14.7.23

Friday 14th July 2023 – Y5 Weekly Update

Looking back:

It’s hard to believe this is the last update of the year! What an amazing class this has been to teach – hardworking, sensible, humorous, kind and enthusiastic... are just a few words to describe them. It has been an absolute pleasure to be their teacher for the year. Thank you to all parents/guardians for your support over the year – I really appreciate it.

This has been a great week in Year 5. On Monday, we had someone from the Fire Service in class giving the children a really useful talk about road safety. In English, the children were given a little bit of writing freedom to create their own story based on King Kong.

Our foundation work this week has been all about moving toys. The children have studied how a cam mechanism works and designed their own moving toy. On Thursday and Friday, the children have built their own toy and they look great!

The children seem to have enjoyed Bikeability and hopefully this has helped them with their cycling confidence and their ability to keep themselves safe on the roads.

Year 5 – Pupils’ Highlights:

  • We enjoyed designing our own moving toy.
  • We have really liked doing Bikeability.
  • We have loved doing coding on Scratch with Reuben (Mrs Cowell’s son!).

Family discussion questions:

  • Ask the children what they learned about staying safe on the roads from the Fire Service.
  • Ask the children what they have learned about the Highway Code from their two days of Bikeability.

Looking forward:

It’s our last four days together next week. This time will mostly be spent finishing a few topics off. We have a couple of science lessons to complete, and an RE lesson on pilgrimages.

On Wednesday, we get to watch the Year 6 performance which we can’t wait for.

On Thursday morning, we have a few little housekeeping jobs to complete, they getting the children’s books together. If they would like to, they can bring in a traditional game to play in the morning (nothing electronic – no ipads or consoles). We will also be saying goodbye to the Year 6s in an assembly.

Enjoy the summer!
