Yr 4 Looking Back and Forth 16th October

Friday 16th October 2020 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4

Looking back:

The children completed their biographies this week and published them.  This was a huge undertaking.  I was super proud of the class as they worked their socks off to publish them.  The biographies that the children completed for homework, were fantastic to read too.  I learnt so much about people that inspire them.

In maths, we have continued our work on Place Value, and looked at negative numbers, looking at the temperatures all year round in Moscow, Nuut and Ottawa.  We worked on our arithmetic skills with Mrs Riddell.

In the afternoons; we looked worked on our collages and have neeearly finished them.  We looked at how sound is measured and found out that the noisiest animal on the Earth is a sperm whale.  We watched Steve Bagshall swim with them and listened intently to his descriptions and scientific explanations.  This week in RE, the children looked at Halal in their studies on Islam as well as traditional Muslim dress.  The class worked on their journeys work in preparation for the display at the train station.

Questions to ask at home:

  • Who is Annie Edison?
  • Why is she famous?
  • Where is Niagara falls?
  • What is sound measured in?
  • How loud is a sperm whale?
  • What is Halal?
  • What is a negative number?
  • Where can you find them?
  • Which was colder Ottawa, Nuut or Moscow?

Looking forward:

Following on from our biography work, the children will be writing diary entries as if they’re Annie Edison.  In maths, we will continue our work on negative numbers as well as Roman numerals and arithmetic.

We will complete our work on Journeys, so these can be displayed at the train station.

As we are not here on Friday, I have asked the children to bring in their homework on Thursday instead.  The class has new timestables, however I will test these after half term.

Homework in Year 4

Reading – daily at least 15 mins – remember to take the Accelerated Reader Quizzes

Rockstars – as much as possible 10 mins daily is ideal – at least once a week for 20 mins

Soundcheck is a great tool to prepare the children for the MTC (Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check)

Spellings  – Mrs Riddell – Please learn them for the test on Wednesday.  It is better to look at them for 5 minutes each day than try to learn them all in one night.  The children remember them better learnt over the week.
